Record Store Day Australia, the annual celebration of the record store, has announced that another ambassador for 2015 will be iconic Australian musician and ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Joe Camilleri.
As leader of Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons and The Black Sorrows and writer of songs such as Hit And Run, Shape I’m In, Hold On To Me, Harley and Rose and Chained To The Wheel, Joe’s music has become part of Australian music culture. In 2014 Joe celebrated 50 years in the music business. The release of the critically acclaimed album Certified Blue from The Black Sorrows added to the 50th celebrations by giving him his first mainstream chart appearance in almost a decade, peaking at #2 on the ARIA Jazz and Blues Chart and remaining in the Top 10 for forty weeks.The Black Sorrows will follow up the success of Certified Blue with two limited edition 12” vinyl LPs titled Endless Sleep Chapter 46 and Chapter 47, to be released simultaneously on April 17. Joe and The Black Sorrows will perform instore at Basement Discs Melbourne on Saturday 18th April to launch the new release.
Joe is a man who truly loves and lives music, and the perfect ambassador for a day that is all about music and music lovers. “When I heard Joe Camilleri was interested in being our ambassador I was delighted” said George Papadopoulos, chairman of AMRA, which runs Record Store Day Australia. “It’s a cliché that is bandied about far too often, but to call Joe an icon of Australian music is truly accurate. Welcome to Joe Camilleri.”
Joe Camilleri said: “It’s an honour to be ambassador for Record Store Day Australia this year. It’s always easy to talk about what you love. As a lad of fifteen or sixteen, with a gang of change, I’d head to Batman Records in Melbourne. It was always a great day if I found a vinyl disc that would take me somewhere new…it seemed like a never ending supply as a music fan. I’d find it, buy it, tuck it under my arm like an accessory and then walk 10km home cos I spent the bus fare. For me that’s the record store experience.”
