Get ready to grab the popcorn and open a bottle of wine, because Marilyn’s Missfits invites you to a movie night to fundraise for Cancer Council SA in September.
With My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 the movie of choice, gear up for a night of cinematic charm, belly laughs, and all-around good vibes at the Capri Cinema in Goodwood.
Your ticket isn’t just a pass to a movie; it’s your chance to be a part of something bigger, lending a helping hand to those fighting the battle against cancer.
Marilyn’s Missfits is a group of 14 men and women who compete in the annual Marilyn Jetty Swim Team in the Brighton Jetty Classic and team member Marion Berrington said they received amazing community support each year.
“We have been the highest fundraising team the last four years, we have raised over $56,000 so far and each year it just gets bigger. We held a movie night last year and it was just so successful,” she says.
“The movie we have picked this year is going to be very popular I think, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and the Capri is amazing, it fits so many people. I think the movie will sell itself because everyone I have spoken to they are raving about that they can’t wait to see the movie because the first two were so funny.”
“I can’t wait, it is so much fun, it is fun fundraising in a group as well. The whole night is just a buzz. We have a lot of loyal supporters that come to teach fundraiser and we usually have the same sponsors every year which is great.”
Guests can raise a glass while raising funds with a glass of red of white wine on arrival, thanks to Scarpantoni Wines from McLaren Vale.
A mystery wine wall, door prizes, raffles and a main auction run by a professional auctioneer will be held on the night, with all funds raised on the evening going towards Cancer Council SA.
The Marilyn Jetty Swim was founded by Sarah Tinney, whose mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, and passed away in 2007. From the first day of her mother’s diagnosis, Sarah pledged to help raise money to cure cancer in her honour.
The event attracts around 500 entrants each year, with 513 entrants in last year’s swim, and the 2024 swim will be the 11th anniversary since the Marilyn Jetty Swim commenced, which has raised over $1 million and counting.
Everyone raises funds for Cancer Council SA to enter the event before donning their best Marilyn Monroe attire and swimming around the Brighton Jetty on the first Sunday in February each year.
Marion says the movie night will be a fun night out while raising funds and awareness for a serious cause.
“Everybody has got a cancer story within their family and friendship group and what the Cancer Council do to support people living with cancer is amazing,” she says.
