Josh Wheeler takes the helm at Green Industries SA, eyes sustainable future for South Australia

Josh Wheeler has been named as the new Chief Executive of Green Industries SA (GISA).

In a pivotal move for South Australia’s environmental initiatives, Josh Wheeler has been named as the new Chief Executive of Green Industries SA (GISA), the state’s leader in promoting a circular economy.

Josh Wheeler, who has been an acting Chief Executive since March following the departure of Professor Ian Overton, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

His background includes two decades of service within the South Australian public sector.

Prior to his acting role, Wheeler headed GISA’s governance and corporate business functions. He has also been instrumental in leading the development of South Australia’s single-use plastics legislation.

The appointment comes after a detailed recruitment process.

Distinguished for his eight years of service at GISA, Wheeler is credited with advancing South Australia’s efforts towards a sustainable circular economy as outlined in the Green Industries SA Act 2004.

His earlier career includes significant roles at the Environment Protection Authority and various other state agencies, dating back to his entry into public service through a government traineeship program 20 years ago.

Susan Close MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, highlighted the strategic importance of Wheeler’s selection for the role.

“I am pleased to recommend Mr Wheeler’s appointment to the Premier and Her Excellency the Governor and congratulate him on his appointment,” she said.

“Mr Wheeler has the skills, experience, and passion necessary to lead the dynamic and high-performing agency Green Industries SA, which contributes to the delivery of SA’s Economic Statement and our net zero commitments through the circular economy. I look forward to continuing to work with Mr Wheeler.”

Similarly, Nikki Govan, the GISA Board Presiding Member, praised Wheeler’s appointment.

“On behalf of the Board of Green Industries SA, I congratulate Mr Wheeler on his appointment. Mr Wheeler has demonstrated himself as a leader at Green Industries SA and in the public sector,” she said.

“He is assuming the role at an important time – as we are developing the next statewide strategy to outline actions to drive South Australia’s transition to a circular economy over 2025 to 2030.”

Josh Wheeler expressed his gratitude and vision for the future upon accepting the new role.

“I am honoured and excited to continue to perform the role of Chief Executive of Green Industries SA, and to continue to lead such a dedicated and passionate team,” he said.

“I am committed to a sustainable future for South Australia and look forward to building on the agency’s strong legacy of achievements in resource recovery and developing this leadership into all areas of the circular economy.”

Future initiatives under Wheeler’s leadership are expected to be critical in fulfilling South Australia’s environmental policies and economic strategies centred around sustainability and resource efficiency.
