Port Adelaide Football Club’s history is stepping into the digital age with a brand-new self-guided museum tour. The interactive adventure of the club’s museum at Alberton Oval brings more than 150 years of Port Adelaide’s football history to anyone with a smartphone or tablet.
“The main idea behind the tour is accessibility. We want as many people as possible to experience our history and understand the story behind the Port Adelaide Football Club,” explains Chief Marketing Officer Kristen Eckhardt.
“You can use your own headphones, but if you don’t have any, you can borrow them from reception. Even if you’re vision impaired, you can hear all about the history.”
Using QR codes placed at 10 stops across the museum, visitors are led through a treasure trove of history guided by narrators and former Port Adelaide Football Club captains Aaron Phillips and Tim Genova, as well as support commentator Chris Dittmar.

As you make your way around, you’ll be able to relive the back-to-back premiership wins, listen to the aggressive roar of the crowd on game day and hear audio from club legends like Bob Quinn, Russell Ebert, “Big Bob” McLean, and John Cahill.
“We tried to pick out key moments. Our run of six premierships is a moment that we talk about, there’s a little theaterette section that mimics locker rooms, and there’s the moment when we joined the AFL, which is its separate section,” she adds.
“We also thought it was important to acknowledge our fans. [They] are so key to our game day experience.”

But the tour isn’t just for fans – it also attracts history buffs, footy lovers and even casual visitors.
“You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy it… even if you just love history. We had someone come in from the local library who wasn’t a football fan but was fascinated by the historical aspect of the tour. That was really rewarding,” claims a spokesperson of the club.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or need a weekend activity that fuels all the senses, this interactive museum is the perfect culture fix and a modern alternative to your classic museum visit.
“Museums these days need to be more than just what you can see. They need to be what you can do. We had to think of a way to modernise how people engage with history and I think we’ve achieved it here,” they add.

The tour was made possible through an Activating Heritage Tourism grant from the Tourism Industry Council of South Australia in partnership with the Department for Environment and Water and highlights Port Adelaide’s commitment to sharing its legacy with the wider community.
