Kahani Indian Food Trail brings authentic Indian to Glenelg

Kahani Indian Food Trail is Glenelg’s newest Indian restaurant, claiming to have one of the best butter chicken dishes in Adelaide!

If you enjoy dining out and experiencing authentic flavours, indulging in traditional cuisine, and having a foodie experience that transports you to another world, this new restaurant at Glenelg’s Marina Pier is ready and waiting to welcome you.

Kahani Indian Food Trail, which opened in January of this year, has quickly captured the hearts and tastebuds of food lovers across SA, offering not only a picturesque location and ocean scenery but a true dining experience that travels through the diverse flavours and tales of India.

Kahani, which means ‘stories’, was born from a shared passion for authentic Indian cuisine, thanks to two visionary friends with extensive experience in both hospitality and the culinary arts, including award-winning Executive Chef Vijay Sethi and Sunil Singh.

With over two decades of expertise, Executive Chef and co-owner Vijay leads the culinary team at Kahani, infusing each dish with a touch of history and tradition.

‘I wanted to establish an Indian cuisine restaurant that introduced the diversity of food in India, with dishes ranging from the north to south, east to west of India’, says Vijay.

The menu at Kahani is full of diverse dishes, offering everything from street food and royal curries to traditional breads and sweetly satisfying desserts.

From traditional dishes of Punjab to the coastal delicacies of Kerala, each dish tells a unique story of its origins and cultural significance—the fragrant biryanis are a nod to the grandeur of Awadhi Cuisine.

One of the standout dishes and a popular one among guests is the Goalondo Chicken Curry, a simple yet flavourful creation that dates back to the 19th century. This dish, born out of necessity and ingenuity, has become a beloved staple, showcasing the creativity of Indian culinary heritage.

‘What was a simple meal served aboard the steamer became known as the Goalondo Chicken Curry or Steamer Chicken Curry’, says chef Vijay.

Claiming to have one of the best butter chicken dishes in Adelaide, the menu at Kahani also features an array of authentic street food, including beef short ribs, fish tikka, and kebabs.

There’s also a selection of earthy yet rich curries like the Dak Bungalow Duck Curry originating from the British Raj, Kahani’s signature Daal Makhani, with buttery slow-cooked black lentils and the Kadhai Chicken, a tender chicken tikka.

Complementing the expansive menu is a selection of signature cocktails, such as the Punjabi Krantt, a twist on the classic margarita with green habanero-infused tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime and hibiscus syrup; the Masala Chai Espresso Martini with vodka, Licor 43, coffee and housemade chai; and the Mumbai Mule with vodka, ginger liqueur, fresh lemon and honey.

If you’re looking for an intimate spot for your next date night or on the hunt for the perfect location for your next event or special occasion, Vijay and the team at Kahani provide a truly holistic experience beyond the impressive food and drink menus. It’s also a great destination for the whole family these school holidays.

Regardless of your dietary needs or preferences, it’s an intricate journey of flavours from the various regions of India, and a welcome invitation to immerse yourself in the country’s vibrant tradition and culture.
