Flinders University has initiated a pioneering citizen science project aimed at restoring the marine environment off the coast of Kangaroo Island. The ‘Reef Rewind’ initiative, part of the broader Passport to Recovery (P2R) program, recently unveiled an underwater snorkel trail featuring twelve 3D printed concrete domes. This installation is designed to facilitate the regeneration of native marine species, including oysters, along the Kingscote foreshore.
Dr. Ryan Baring, a marine restoration ecologist from Flinders University who has spearheaded the Reef Rewind project, expressed his excitement about the support received from the Reef Design Lab in Melbourne. “After working on this project for more than two years, it’s exciting to have support from the Reef Design Lab in Melbourne to establish this new feature across the main foreshore area,” Dr. Baring stated. His efforts highlight the significance of restoring native shellfish reefs, which have suffered considerable decline across Australia due to overfishing, dredging, and other human activities.
The Reef Rewind snorkel trail is strategically placed just 30 meters offshore in front of the Ozone Hotel. This position not only enhances its accessibility but also serves an educational purpose by providing a small-scale, visible example of larger reef restoration efforts. Dr. Cassie Hoepner, P2R project manager and marine biologist, expects this installation to play a crucial role in long-term monitoring and attraction of marine life. “It will assist in the long-term monitoring of reef restoration and the attraction of marine life to the popular tourist area,” she explained.
This project marks the first citizen science-based oyster reef restoration endeavour in Australia. The Reef Rewind initiative is one facet of the extensive P2R program, which has engaged the community and visitors in diverse conservation efforts following the devastating bushfires of 2019-2020. These fires had a catastrophic impact on the island, destroying over half of its vegetation and wildlife habitats.
Additionally, the P2R program is set to launch four more projects on its dedicated app. These include ‘My Island Footprint’, which encourages participants to analyse their carbon footprint, and ‘NoBurn’, which utilises AI technology to predict bushfire susceptibility based on fuel loads. Other initiatives like ‘Rainbow Spiders’ and ‘CoastSnap’ will study the adaptability of local spider species and monitor changes in coastal processes, respectively.
The Passport to Recovery program has received robust support not only from the scientific and local communities but also from tourists who contribute to data collection and environmental efforts. Tracy Croft, General Manager, South Australia for SeaLink Marine & Tourism, emphasized the program’s importance: “The eco-based efforts to restore and maintain the diversity of Kangaroo Island’s flora and wildlife is crucial. Programs including citizen science provide an excellent opportunity for tourists to connect with and make a meaningful contribution to this beautiful destination.”
Funding for these initiatives has been sourced from various supporters including the federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, the Kangaroo Island Council, and other local enterprises.
