Kangaroo Island makes Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Australia Travel List

Kangaroo Island claims international recognition once again, ranked by Lonely Planet as 8 out of 500 unmissable experiences in Australia.

Kangaroo Island has claimed yet another international prize, now making a top-ten position in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Australia Travel List, which ranks the top 500 unmissable experiences and hidden gems across Australia.

KI which is already locally known for its native bushland, wildlife, adventure, pristine beaches, spectacular landscapes and food and wine experiences has received a big boost from its inclusion in this list.

“Lonely Planet has uncovered a not-so-hidden secret that is already widely known in South Australia – Kangaroo Island is an incredible place to visit,” said Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison.

“It’s known for its open and stunning coastlines, gorgeous wildlife and the friendly faces behind the many wonderful boutique small businesses.”

Ranked from 1 to 500, the Lonely Planet list covers “hidden gems” from every Aussie state and territory.

The South Australian region is listed among the best spots in the country, coming in at number eight behind experiences like Uluru in the Northern Territory, MONA in Tasmania, and the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.

KI was hit by devastating bushfires at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020, but has begun rebuilding and regrowing – and continues to claim international accolades.

“KI is not just a brilliant place to visit, but any local will tell you it’s a lifestyle and experience like no other,” said Member for Mawson, Leon Bignell.

“This latest gong is no surprise, KI is one of the greatest places on earth.”
