Us South Aussies know that our state is home to some beautiful places. We’ve got aches of arid outback, dramatic coastline, world-class wineries and historic towns.
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful havens is Kangaroo Island, a sanctuary for wildlife and natural, rugged beauty just minutes from the mainland South Australia.
And now it’s got a spot on the world map, with the New York Times announcing Kangaroo Island as one of their top ten destinations to visit in 2023.
Coming in at number seven on the annual 52 Places list, the island was recognised for its natural beauty. The New York Times said that the island was “a haven for koalas and other wild creatures, [and] healing after devastating wildfires… known for incredible wildlife, breathtaking ocean views, and its status as an ecological haven”.
While you’re on the island, you can stop by The Enchanted Fig Tree where Chef Stephanie Vass works with the island’s best produce to create flavours and taste sensations that are truly out of this world.
There’s another Australian location on the list, too, with this year’s list also including “the shape-shifting sandstone heart of a continent and its Indigenous heritage” Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
The 2023 edition of the guide focused on the question of why people travel, highlighting food, culture, adventure and natural beauty as four of the main elements that drive us to see the world.
Taking out the top spot on the acclaimed list was London (United Kingdom), followed by Moroioka (Japan) and the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (Arizona). Then, Kilmartin Glen (Scotland), Auckland (New Zealand) and Palm Springs (California) came in before South Australia’s beloved haven, Kangaroo Island in seventh spot.
