If you’re a local or a regular visitor to Kangaroo Island you have probably noticed there has always been something missing. Yes, there’s beautiful scenery, world-class food and outstanding wineries, but despite all of that there is nowhere in the island’s largest town of Kingscote to get a good old-fashioned takeaway sandwich. Until now.
Two weeks ago, the town’s newest and only sandwich shop, So Sando, opened its doors to a welcoming community offering a range of light bites, toasties and sandwiches as well as a delicious range of drinks from single-origin batch brew coffee to smoothies and bubble tea. A selection of sweet treats is also available with Unicorn Poo and Crack Tarts turning heads on the menu but getting rave reviews, especially from the younger customers.
So Sando is the combined brain-child of a group of friends, Wei, Sibyl, Amanda and Dylan, who have combined their hospo experience to fill the sandwich-shaped gap in the market.
“The idea of So Sando came about because there isn’t anywhere in Kingscote to get a takeaway sandwich – somewhere people, especially tradies or business workers, can get a quick bite to dine in or to go,” says co-owner Amanda.
“Our business ethos is offering delicious but affordable food that won’t break the bank even if you were to eat with us every day.”
With an all-day dining menu, the friends have ensured they can cater to everyone with customisable options.
“The crowd favourites so far have definitely been The Cubanos which is homemade mojo pork, leg ham and Swiss cheese, and the Reuben with house-made pastrami and sauerkraut,” says Amanda.
Walking into So Sando, you may recognise the smiling faces of the team who have worked at different venues in Kingscote and of course Dylan, whom together with his wife Yolandi, own the island’s much loved restaurant, The Odd Plate.
Currently, So Sando is open Wednesday – Sunday but the crew hope to increase their hours in the near future. “Moving forward, we would like to include even more food options for customers and get to a stage where we can open 7 days a week,” they say.
So Sando is located at 59 Dauncey Street, Kingscote.
