Kangaroo Island, Whitsundays & Phillip Island are Aussie tourist hotspots driving economic growth

Explore the surge in regional tourism as revealed in new data, showcasing significant economic growth and job creation in areas like Kangaroo Island and the Whitsundays, driven by substantial government investment and support.

New data released by Austrade’s Tourism Research Australia (TRA), showcases a significant increase in tourism across regional Australia, highlighting its pivotal role in the economic development of regional communities. According to the latest figures, the economic impact of tourism increased in 97% of regions during the 2022-23 period, with a notable majority exceeding growth of 50% compared to the previous year.

Tourism is a major economic driver, particularly in regional Australia, where it accounts for 6.7% of jobs, in contrast to 2.9% in the capital cities. The findings reveal significant growth in several key areas. Kangaroo Island in South Australia has seen substantial benefits, with tourism revenue making up 27% of the local economy and employing 38% of the population. In Victoria, Phillip Island also shows similar prosperity from tourism, accounting for 18% of the regional economy and 30% of employment. Queensland’s Whitsundays region enjoys tourism contributing to 12% of its economy and 22% of local jobs.

The Albanese Government has shared its commitment to fostering this growth, highlighting the sector’s potential to generate more jobs and opportunities. The government’s support includes the implementation of several initiatives aimed at boosting the tourism infrastructure necessary to sustain this growth. This includes a $10 million investment through the Caravan Parks Grants Program, which enhances the facilities of local operators, making these areas more attractive to tourists.

The Growing Regions Program’s first round has already distributed over $116 million to fund tourism-related infrastructure projects across rural and regional Australia. These projects not only improve community facilities but also stimulate economic growth.

The data compiled by TRA serves as a tool for understanding and strategizing for the future of tourism in Australia. The agency’s efforts help in formulating a national strategy aimed at increasing tourist expenditure, particularly in the less-urbanised parts of the country.

Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism, urged Australians to explore their country and support the domestic tourism industry. He said “I encourage Australians to continue to get out and explore our magnificent country, knowing that not only will you have a great experience, but that you are also contributing to the creation of more jobs and opportunities in our communities.”
