The Karkoo team recently announced on Facebook that they have sadly closed their nursery in Blackwood. While this spot provided an incredibly large and diverse range of plants, and cute indoor and outdoor accessories, the team are continuing their legacy by relocating to the historic Mount Lofty Railway Station.
“We want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to our wonderful Blackwood community that have supported us over the years,” the post read.
“Opening Blackwood almost a decade ago was the best decision we could’ve made for our wholesale nursery that was on the brink of closing due to the demise of many independent garden centres meaning we had less businesses to supply.”
Although labeled a Nursery, Karkoo in Blackwood was more than a place to buy all things plants. It was a major part of the community that provided everyone with their garden needs – whether a quick pit stop to grab some soil, or an afternoon outing exploring the nursery.
“Karkoo at Blackwood quickly became an iconic home and garden store with the most loyal customer base we could’ve ever asked for. In 2021 we expanded to the amazing Historic Johnston Brewery site in Oakbank and can’t believe we’re expanding to another stunning heritage destination,” the post continued.
“Although we are very sad to be leaving Blackwood, we are thrilled to have found a new home in Stirling, less than 15 minutes from Blackwood.”
Created by Jane and Peter Rowat, Karkoo has come from humble beginnings as a garden ware wholesale business. In 2016, the industry showed decreasing wholesale demand and the pair made the bold move to become a retailer in place of shutting its doors. Soon to settle in Mount Lofty too, the historic site will feature a beautiful cafe and gift shop.
“Karkoo Station fits our vision perfectly, set in the stunning Historic Mount Lofty Railway Station, with beautiful grounds and charming old buildings. We are grateful to be able to transform this long closed site and open it up for everyone to enjoy,” the post read.
Their Oakbank location, another great spot to shop around and grab a coffee, is another great spot in the Adelaide Hills to visit over the weekend! With a adorable cafe, you can make a day put of it and have breakfast or lunch.
