Earlier in the year, we found out about the grand transformation plans for the historic former Mount Lofty Railway Station amongst majestic greenery and an active train line. Now, we’re even more excited, because Karkoo Nursery has announced they are moving into the space this September, with a refreshing new nursery, gift shop and cafe.

Created by Jane and Peter Rowat, Karkoo has come from humble beginnings as a garden ware wholesale business still operating in Mount George. By 2016, the industry showed decreasing wholesale demand and the pair made the bold move to become a retailer in place of shutting its doors.

With a huge amount of hard work and passion the business has endured major success and found itself with two beautiful locations in Oakbank and, until mid-September, Blackwood.

The business now finds itself with the amazing opportunity to revamp and reignite the magic of the previously in disrepair Mount Lofty Railway Station. Karkoo Oakbank manager, Imogen says: “A real-estate agent reached out after visiting the Oakbank nursery. They envisaged Karkoo as a perfect occupant for the railway station and we absolutely jumped on the opportunity.”

An impressive amount of TLC has gone into getting the abandoned station into working condition. Imogen says the platform “was really overgrown and we’ve had to clear a bunch of scrub.” Imogen says the team have unveiled a network of old paths which they worked hard to reestablish.

“Karkoo Station” has a charming new vision to really engage with the beautiful expansive space. Imogen says “it’s a gorgeous old building which will host our cafe, gift shop and nursery.

There will be cafe tables overlooking the active train line” safely nestled behind a fence on the platform edge. Imogen says it’ll be a thrilling opportunity to enjoy a coffee or two and hope to watch a train going by on the historic railway line.

Imogen was excited to say “the new store will also be pet friendly and there are some great walks in and around the station.”

Karkoo at Mount Lofty Station looks to be ready for a mid-September opening date with Blackwood currently ramping down. Get yourself down to Karkoo Blackwood before it relocates to Mount Lofty for some great discounts on beautiful plants, homewares and furniture.
