Kate McLennan – Homeward Bound – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

For a comedian, Kate McLennan is a sweet storyteller with an adorable girlish charm. She tells the tale of moving home to live with her parents after breaking up from a 4 year relationship. Her sister is soon to be married and, as Kate suffers through the wedding preparations and the birth of her niece, she begins to find she no longer needs the wisdom of old Golden Girls episodes to guide her through life.

She plays all of the roles in her story, creating an affectionate world full of familiar but quirky characters, from her father who will only “suffer publically”, to her nasally sister, who sounds like she’s blowing into a bottle when she speaks.

McLennan writes beautiful letters to her infant niece, revealing her inner feelings and offering her own little wisdoms for life.

Homeward Bound is a homage to family and a journey of healing, told with a lot of beauty and plenty of laughs. She’s a comedian with pathos, with an ideal balance of both.

Let yourself be charmed.
