Barossa winery wins best Shiraz in London awards for second year

A Barossa winery clinched the trophy for best Shiraz for the second consecutive year at the prestigious International Wine Challenge.

Kellermeister, a boutique family-owned Barossa winery, has achieved prestigious recognition at the 40th International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London. For the second consecutive year, the winery has secured the Trophy for Best Barossa Shiraz. This year’s award-winning shiraz was Kellermeister’s 2022 “The Meister Shiraz”.

The International Wine Challenge is widely known as the world’s most prestigious wine competition, frequently described as “The Oscars of wine”. Besides winning the trophy, Kellermeister also earned another Gold medal for its 2022 “Wild Witch Shiraz”. This repeat success at the IWC solidifies Kellermeister’s standout position among the finest shiraz producers globally. The winery’s commitment to quality has been evident since the Pearce family took ownership in 2012, the same year Kellermeister was honoured with the Best Shiraz in the World Trophy at the 28th IWC.

Mark Pearce, the owner and Chief Winemaker at Kellermeister, shared his thoughts on this remarkable achievement: “I’m very proud of my team. Our unrelenting pursuit is to deliver power, complexity, and elegance in Barossa shiraz, which is something only the Barossa can emphatically achieve when well made, so it’s extremely gratifying to be judged the best example of Barossa Shiraz at the highest level on the World Stage.”

Mark Pearce’s unique winemaking philosophy has been shaped by regular visits to France, specifically the Rhone Valley—renowned for its shiraz and grenache. His experiences there have deepened his understanding of shiraz’s potential expressions. Each year, he spends time with some of the region’s most renowned winemakers and this has shaped his winemaking approach noticeably.

However, Pearce also emphasises the distinctive characteristics of the Barossa region, stating: “The Barossa’s extraordinary suitability to grow Shiraz with the unique qualities that our best vineyards can express is inimitable anywhere else in the world, so we play to those inherent strengths. We don’t try to make wine in the style of any other region, but seek to do justice to the extraordinary strengths the Barossa offers.”

He also noted that his success hinges significantly on collaborating with the best vineyards and grape growers in the Barossa. He values a philosophy of quality and integrity, and does not shy away from parting with growers that do not share this vision.

The acclaim by the IWC for Kellermeister’s 2022 “The Meister Shiraz” included commendations on its “inky, opaque, youthful colour with dark rich concentrated black fruits—brambles, creamy mulberries, damson, chocolate covered cherries. Fabulous balance and concentration.”

This back-to-back win at the IWC reaffirms Kellermeister’s renowned prowess in creating superior shiraz while also reinforcing the exceptional capabilities of Barossa as a leader in the wine industry.

The Meister retails for $265 per bottle, the Wild Witch for $88.50 per bottle.
