KESAB Sustainable Cities & Communities Awards Launched

KESAB environmental solutions have launched the 2012 Sustainable Cities and Communities Awards Program.

Community groups, schools, councils and businesses are invited to showcase their environmental action and initiatives as they work towards a more sustainable community. Participants are asked to address the categories of community engagement, energy efficiency, water management, biodiversity, waste and resource recovery as well as education and innovation.

In 2011, KESAB received well over 200 category entries for Sustainable Communities, with representation from communities all over the State. At their annual awards ceremony in October 2011, Mount Gambier were crowned the 2011 winner.

Then CEO of the City of Mount Gambier, Greg Muller, had this to say about the awards;

“The Sustainable Communities Program allows your community to seek continuous improvement across every aspect of sustainability and be judged accordingly.

A program that seeks to measure your community’s sustainability achievements and awareness and compare it with other similar community’s is fundamental to being able to develop and evolve.

In addition your community has very willing and dedicated people and their efforts deserve to be recognised.

The Sustainable Communities Program does all of these things in an environment of friendly competition and goodwill throughout the State.

Mount Gambier has achieved considerable success at both the State awards and National awards.The respect within our community of this level of recognition is a major benefit because our community now has a belief in itself and its future. To receive State and National promotion of our achievements is our most significant added bonus.”

KESAB will again be partnering with the Department for Water in 2012, to deliver the Water for Good Excellence awards to South Australian Schools and Community groups. The program is delivered with ongoing partners Sims Metal Management, Veolia Environmental Services, Zero Waste SA, Recyclers of SA and long time supporters, Local Government Association and Medika Gallery, as well as the Packaging Stewardship Forum and Butt Free Australia.

Partnerships enable KESAB to recognise and reward the high achievers and outstanding actions enhancing and restoring the environment in the community. Long term sustainable practices are becoming entrenched in how South Australian communities manage local issues and the 2012 awards will again showcase the best examples.
