Kickstart your career in media with Fresh 92.7’s Wavelength program

Want a career in media? Fresh 92.7’s Wavelength current affairs program is looking for its next lot of volunteer supertars.

You might know community radio station Fresh 92.7 as the home for electronic music and bangers, but with almost 15 years of experience on air, it’s also become a voice for the youth of Adelaide.

Run mostly by volunteers, Fresh 92.7 has served as a stepping stone for many young media students looking to get a foot in the door and it has played a direct role in launching the careers of some pretty big names.

Radio hosts Ben and Liam are one prime example, joined by others like Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann and Sam Mac.

If you’re a regular Fresh fan you’ve probably heard of its current affairs program Wavelength. If you’re not familiar, Wavelength is a weekly program that takes a moment to talk about the current happenings around Adelaide.

The show is crucial to the station, as it keeps Fresh’s wonderful listeners up to date on current politics, news, information or what’s happening in Adelaide. It covers serious topics like changes to our welfare systems, to not so serious subject matter like the rise of man buns.

“As executive producer this year it’s my passion and role to allow my team to explore stories they are interested in, whether that is sexual health, education, climate change, indigenous rights, politics, arts, mental health or anything else,” executive producer of Wavelength Cassandra Johns says.

Wavelength is not only a great way for listeners to keep up to date with what’s happening around the state, but also serves as an opportunity for aspiring young journalists to get a hand in sourcing and reporting in a news quality news environment.

The best part? The show is currently on the hunt for the next lot of Wavelength superstars.

“Starting as an intern at Fresh 92.7 almost 2 years ago as a university student, the wavelength and Fresh team supported, educated and guided me through my time,” Johns say.

“My goal this year for wavelength is to be the great support for my team as the Fresh team were for me. Wavelength is designed with flexible volunteer hours so it’s great for people wanting to try out a new career path, unsure how to get a start in the industry or just want to try something new”.

Volunteers will learn how to host, interview people and communicate with clients, pitch ideas and execute post production tasks.

Listening to the show, it’s almost hard to believe it’s run by volunteers and that’s probably why so many of them go on to have such successful careers.

Working on Wavelength is a great addition to the resume as it’s highly regarded in the media world having previously won CBAA Award for Excellence in Spoken Word and the SACBA Award for Best Interview.

With a fun, inclusive workplace environment, Fresh is not just a great place to advance your career but also to make some life-long friends.
