Killers is an action comedy starring Ashton Kutcher who recently graced our shores for the Australian red carpet premiere.  Kutcher plays Spencer Aimes a contract killer who meets newly single Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl, 27 Dresses) in Nice, Italy. Jen is on holiday with her overprotective father (Tom Selleck) and her “spirited” mother (Catherine O’Hara, A Mighty Wind) trying to overcome her breakup when she meets Spencer.  After a whirlwing holiday romance, Spencer decides to put love before his career and quits for a life of marital bliss back in suburban USA with Jen much to his protesting boss, Holbrook (Martin Mull).  Three years later Spencer’s past comes back to haunt him.

Directed by Robert Luketic (The Ugly Truth) and written by Bob Derosa and Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven), this lacklustre script is not that funny and mildly entertaining at best.  There is an attempt at some sort of storyline and plot twist but as you are so disengaged, by the time it arrives it is just enough to wake you up in time for the films ending.  There is little on screen chemistry between Kutcher and Heigl so much so that Selleck and O’Hara actually have more sizzle together. Kutcher has always looked uncomfortable in any vaguely romantic role (think Just Married) and this film is no exception.  His character resembles a goofy college brat rather than a killer who would fall for an older, more mature and serious Heigl in this film.  Possibly he was channelling his Dude Where’s my Car character in this film.  Even the one dimensional caricature like neighbours fail to provide any laughs with the only thrill is viewing a shirtless Kutcher, and for the guys a well endowned Heigl in a bra. Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia and France the cinematography by Russell Carpenter makes good use of these locations, particularly in the south of France.  However that is not enough to save this B rating flick.
