The BDSM community of Adelaide return for their fourth consecutive Fringe to present a myth-busting demonstration of their lifestyle choices.

BDSM is a compound acronym comprising “Bondage and Discipline” (B&D), “Dominance and Submission” (D&S), and “Sadism and Masochism” (S&M), and it’s all on show in this late night adults-only presentation by experienced Masters and Mistresses who use power and pain to create sexual tension with their slaves. They are quick to advise that the acts are all safe, sane and mutually consensual but should not be tried at home.

Two stages and a suspension rig in the centre spread the activities across the length of the room. Beginning with rope work (tying up a slave), the show progresses into suspending bound slaves, subjugation, role playing scenarios, bondage, whipping, collaring, cages, dripping candle wax and fire. There’s plenty of skin to be seen, but even more leather and some impressive costuming.

Each act is underscored by a good selection of industrial music and the overall presentation by ‘Sir’ Perry Petron is surprisingly theatrical although in desperate need of a theatre director to teach the participants some basic stage craft.

The acts themselves are demonstrations rather than lessons, so the audience is invited to leave the room at any time if they feel uncomfortable. It’s a credit to the organisers that both at interval and after the show, the participants make themselves available to chat and quickly dispel any dark and sinister assumptions one may have about them. They’re just ordinary people with a kink.

Those expecting a sex show will be quickly disappointed, however those seeking to explore their sexuality or who are simply curious about this hidden subculture will be in for an intriguing couple of hours.
