Celebrating more than two decades in the festival scene, Korean Season is coming to the Adelaide Fringe Festival with four shows in the 2023 program for it’s first Fringe season.
Hello, the Hell: Othello, Kokoon and Black and White Tearoom – Counsellor will showcase a range of Korean talent, focusing on K-Pop and theatre.
Artistic Director, Angella Kwon says this move has been a long time coming, after their first appearance at Edinburgh Fringe in 1999 shot them into fame.
“We’ve performed Korean Season shows at WOMAD in the past, and we’ve wanted to be part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival for years,” says Angella.
“We’ve selected three of our best shows and we will work towards bringing more shows to the Festival based on what we see in 2023″.
“This is very exciting for us, and we hope everyone loves what we present”.
Korean Season’s success comes from all of Angella’s hard and tireless work, paired with the Assembly Festival’s William Burdett-Coutts, they are bringing the best Korean shows from various performance genres to the Fringe.
Working across Assembly and Edinburgh Fringe, Angella and William have built a great reputation for the now-popular inclusion across the UK festival scene and are excited to see where this new venture in Adelaide takes them.
For the Adelaide Fringe, Korean Season will have a base at The Arts Theatre on Angas Street for its three incredible shows.
Hello, the Hell: Othello is a physical theatre performance featuring incredible choreography to tell the fate of the characters well after the original tragedy. Starring a yet-to-be-announced K-Pop idol, the performance takes you through a never-ending nightmare that must be escaped.
K-Pop band, Kokoon, will bring the house down with their blend of rap, song, and comedy. The boy band is best known for their original music as well as covering some of their greatest counterparts including BTS and Blackpink.
The theatrical production Black and White Tearoom – Counsellor centres on an intense interaction with a former cop-turned-counsellor and a patient who visits on the counsellor’s only day off.
Highly lauded by the Oscar-winning director of Parasite Bong Joon-ho, the production was most recently invited to the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania. Its last performance saw the audience award a seven- minute standing ovation.
This show is certainly not to be missed, the Korean Season is a musical performance created from the Korean folk song ‘Arirang’ of more than 600 years ago; Ari Arari. The production tells the story of the enduring bonds of family, Ari Arari symbolises unity between North and South Korea through song.
All shows have a duration of 1 hour and a set fee of $30. Tickets can now be purchased through the Adelaide Fringe website www.adelaidefringe.com.au.
