Brand new takeaway restaurant, Kottu Co., is introducing simple, delicious Sri Lankan street food to Adelaide’s eastern suburbs. Open from 11am for lunch and dinner, Kottu Co. specialises in traditional Sri Lankan kottu and kottu roti. Kottu is a popular dish that often includes chopped roti bread mixed with chicken, vegetables, and curry.
The restaurant wants to make Sri Lankan cuisine accessible for all, welcoming guests with a smile and the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality. As you step inside, you can hear the sounds of kottu roti being prepared fresh on the hot plate right in front of you. Kottu Co. offers kottu, various sweet and savoury roti meals, traditional curries, and Sri Lankan tea and coffee.
On their Facebook, Kottu Co. describes kottu as “a popular Sri Lankan dish made from chopped roti (a type of flatbread) mixed with vegetables, meat, eggs, and various spices. It’s typically cooked on a hot griddle, where the ingredients are finely chopped and stir-fried together, creating a flavorful, hearty meal. Kottu is often served with a spicy sauce on the side and is a favorite street food in Sri Lanka.”
Strolling through urban Sri Lanka, you’ll find street vendors making kottu roti everywhere, with the aromas drawing you in. Kottu Co. also serves sweet and savoury roti meals in four sizes, starting with three plain roti or different combinations of plain and egg roti, all served with onion sambol – a spicy Sri Lankan relish – and a choice of chicken or tomato curry.
After just one week of opening, Kottu Co. confirmed a strong demand for Sri Lankan food, with many locals keen to try the flavours of Sri Lanka, while others wanted to relive their memories from time spent there.
For dessert, enjoy roti in flavours like choc hazelnut, pineapple, and honey nut, all served with vanilla ice cream – almost like a French crepe. These sweet treats pair perfectly with Kottu Co.’s Sri Lankan coffee or milk teas.
Kottu Co. is located in a newly renovated space that blends modernity with hints of Sri Lankan style, featuring decorative window and door frames. The owners’ parents migrated to Australia in the mid-90s, beginning their journey by making “Godamba Roti” (a flatbread) for the Sri Lankan community, which is still available in various local grocery stores today. Motivated by gratitude for their parents’ sacrifices, the owners decided to invest in a business that offers accessible Sri Lankan food, while sharing their culture with the wider South Australian community.
Kottu’s joins a hosts of highly rated restaurants and eateries in its Glenside home, the likes of Singapore House and Uthai Kitchen. What’s more, the new takeaway is just a short walk away from Burnside Village where you can satisfy all your shopping needs!
