Attention hot cross bun lovers! You can now get bakery-fresh treats––including FruChoc hot cross buns––right in Rundle Mall.
Beloved Kytons Bakery is popping up in Rundle Mall with their famous buns on Wednesday 31st and Thursday 1st April. The pop-up shop for the bakery, which recently won a SA Baking Award, will be located under the Gawler Place canopy.

The bakery, which makes around 500,000 hot cross buns in the eight weeks before Easter, is also selling their much-loved hot cross buns at their Edwardstown location, at Foodlands, Drakes and gourmet fruit and vegetable stores, and online until 11pm Monday.
Kytons co-owner Sharon Sutton shares that the ingredients are key for making a quality hot cross bun.
“What you put into the bun is a big determiner in how good the final product is like, and we use top grade sultanas and currants––the plump juicy ones––SA owned Laucke flour, iconic FruChocs in our FruChocs buns and just the right mix of Easter spices,” she says.
“The ingredients are then combined using our age-old recipe under the guidance of our experienced bakers to make half a million soft, fragrant, delicious hot cross buns. We hope that these can help make South Australian’s Easter 2021 just a little bit more special.”

This pop-up comes after a Covid challenging Easter 2020, with lockdowns and restrictions in late March and early April decimating the fundraising and café side of the business. Innovation was the key to continuing to keep the retail store trading safely, so Kytons co-owner Darren opened the front sliding windows, used the outside tables for social distancing and drew chalk hot cross buns to keep the distance between customers as they patiently waited in line.
Sutton hopes that the local-first mentality that was made prominent during the lockdowns will remain strong going forward.
“I hope that SA can continue to go from strength to strength and that we are all able to return to life as it was prior to COVID-19, but remembering some of the lessons we learnt in 2020 – how much we love to spend time our with family and friends and that supporting local businesses and enjoying the wonderful food we make right here in SA is so important – and makes life special,” she says.
