La Traviata set to dazzle

La TtraviataThe State Opera of SA’s (SOSA’s) epic 2014 season opening, La Traviata, is set to dazzle South Australian audiences.

SOSA will premiere a stunning, brand new coproduction of Verdi’s emotionally charged timeless opera at Adelaide’s Festival Theatre from May 3-10, 2014.

Regarded as one of Verdi’s ‘big three’ operas, La Traviata is one of the world’s most acclaimed operatic masterpieces. Since its premiere in 1853 in Venice, audiences have flocked to see the story of love, sacrifice, honour and scandal and hear music that tugs at the heartstrings.

This beautiful production is a three-way collaboration between our State Opera, Brisbane’s OperaQ and New Zealand Opera. In a major coup for South Australia, SOSA has secured the national premiere season. In line with SOSA’s mission to bring the world’s greatest talent to South Australian stages, this production features an outstanding cast of singers including international soprano Elvira Fatykhova, who is known for her outstanding performances as the doomed heroine Violetta in La Traviata, and fresh from Rome, Adelaide favourite Aldo Di Toro together with SA-based baritone Mario Bellanova.

Making his company debut is Hamburg-based, young conductor Nicholas Carter, who is quickly establishing a career as a conductor with exceptional versatility.

SOSA Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director Timothy Sexton said, “premiering this beautiful co-production of La Traviata with such a stellar cast is a spectacular way to open our 2014 season. It’s a year of very exciting collaborations and events, with changes to our traditional format. It will pave the way for new and ground-breaking developments in the years to come.”

2014 is set to be a year of milestones for SOSA with the company staging the world first Philip Glass Trilogy in August at Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. In October, the Verdi focus will be revisited with the gripping Otello.

Tickets for La Traviata start at $60 and can be booked through BASS online or phone 131 246. For more information visit www.saopera.sa.gov.au.
