Labor pledges to build new Adelaide Aquatic Centre

Labor has announced its plans to build a new $80 million Adelaide Aquatic Centre, to provide state-of-the-art swimming and recreational facilities.

Today South Australia’s Labor party announced a new election promise, stating that a Malinauskas Labor Government will build a new $80 million Adelaide Aquatic Centre to provide state-of-the-art swimming and recreational facilities.

The fit-for-purpose centre would replace the much-loved but ageing Adelaide Aquatic Centre which was first built in 1969 as an outdoor pool and redeveloped over the past 50 years as an indoor facility in a series of patchwork projects.

The new Adelaide Aquatic Centre would be built either on the current site or in the adjacent corner, with Labor consulting with the community over the location.

Importantly, Labor has pledged there will be no net loss of Park Lands through the development.

The new centre will include at a minimum:

  • An inside 50m lap pool,
  • Splashdown play spaces; and
  • Health and wellbeing services.

More than 955,000 people use the centre every year, which is estimated to grow to 1.3 million within a decade.

Labor says centre needs significant maintenance works over the next decade at a cost of up to $21 million just to maintain facilities and keep its doors open.

There is structural decay in elements of the centre, no family changerooms, and the spa baths have been permanently closed.
