Sidonie Henbest, looking elegant in a slinky electric blue gown, has assembled a collection of songs associated with some of the great female vocalists, past and present. With the inimitable Matthew Carey at the piano, and Alana Dawes laying down a very melodic foundation on bass, Henbest crams a lot of music into this performance, opening with Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out, Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered and I’ll Get Along Without You Very Well in rapid succession.
Along the way she tells of her high flying career in London and momentous her decision to take a change of pace and pursuer her love of performing, which ultimately led to this evening. A welcome inclusion in the first half was the vocal version of Thelonius Monk’s Ruby, My Dear. His music has long been a favourite of mine and this recalled frond memories of seeing Monk play here in Adelaide many years ago, with Dizzy Gillespie and several other greats of the Be-Bop era.
The second half continued the stream of great numbers, including a short duet with Carey on Come Rain or Come Shine, and the varied song list gave Henbest the chance to show the versatility of her voice. She can really belt out those driving numbers, but she is just as much at home with a smoothly swinging tune or delivering a ballad. She gets right inside each number and gives it her own stamp in a fine evening of music with a strong jazz flavour. You have one more chance to catch her, so be sure that you do.
