After several months of restrictions due to toxic algae blooms, Lake Alexandrina and its surrounding channels, including the Goolwa channel, have been declared safe for recreational use again. Authorities have confirmed that swimming, diving, fishing, and other water-related activities can resume immediately. This announcement also extends to pets, which are now safe to swim in the lake waters.

The clearance was issued following recent water tests conducted by SA Water, which indicated that the hazardous blue-green algae previously found in the lake are no longer present. This resurgence of safe conditions is attributed to the heavy rainfall over the winter months that helped cleanse the lake.

While the direct water supply from the lake isn’t utilised by SA Water for drinking purposes, the company has reassured the public that its other sources continue to provide safe drinking water to the local area.

Dr David Cunliffe, SA Health’s Principal Water Quality Adviser, highlighted the significance of the test results. “Recent testing of water quality at Lake Alexandrina has shown there is no longer a presence of a blue-green algae bloom,” he said. This revelation is particularly timely as warmer weather approaches, inviting an increased number of visitors and local residents to engage in outdoor activities by the lake.

In addition to the immediate resumption of recreational activities, the health advisory against consuming fish from the lake has been lifted. Fish from Lake Alexandrina are once again safe to eat, providing relief and clarity to fishermen and local fish markets.

To uphold this newfound safety, routine weekly testing of the lake’s water quality will continue. This consistent monitoring aims to ensure that any potential resurgence of harmful algae can be swiftly detected and managed before posing a risk to public health or the environment.

The reopening of Lake Alexandrina comes as a relief to the local tourism and hospitality sectors, which have felt the economic impact of the restrictions over the past few months. Businesses around the lake, from boat hire services to lakeside cafes, are optimistic about the return of tourists and locals eager to enjoy the scenic and recreational benefits of Lake Alexandrina without health concerns.

Community members and visitors can stay informed about current water quality updates through the SA Health website. This platform offers insights into water quality alerts and educates the public about the health implications of blue-green algae.
