Langhorne Creek’s best cellar door awards have been announced

The star cellar door, best large cellar door, best food, best tasting experience and best additional experience have been awarded – and it’s worth a trip to check them all out!

Gourmet Traveller Wine have announced this year’s winners for the 2022 Best Cellar Door Awards for Langhorne Creek in South Australia.

Their expert team across Australia traversed the land uncovering the very best experiences for 2022, revealed in the Gourmet Traveller Wine region-by-region guide to Australia’s Best Cellar Doors, supported by Coravin.

Located 70km from Adelaide, Langhorne Creek is on the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, 70km from Adelaide. The region is located between the Adelaide Hills and Lake Alexandrina and is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon – warm, soft, generous and immediately drinkable. Langhorne Creek has the oldest family owned Cabernet vines the world still in production owned by Brothers in Arms Wines in the Lake Plains area.

This year’s awards celebrated the best of the region, with some deserving wineries taking out the honours.

Star Cellar Door: Kimbolton Wines

Having recently won a tourism excellence award in the Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries category at the South Australian tourism awards, Kimbolton Wines are no stranger to accolades.

Their cellar door is a fantastic extension of their brand, combining a unique mix of high gloss navy converted industrial shipping containers with recycled timber and ply features to create a modern and inviting setting nestled amount the gum trees and vines alike.

Kimbolton prides themselves on expanding and evolving the traditional wine tasting experience to create an inviting family friendly tourism destination. With unique experiences and packages on offer there is something for everyone at Kimbolton cellar door. Bookable experiences include wine and cheese flights, kids flights and couple experiences, just to name a few.

Best Large Cellar Door: Lake Breeze Wines

A rustic limestone shed built in the early 1930s has become home to Lake Breeze wines. Further renovations have given them the opportunity to take advantage of the stunning views over the vineyard and provide a contemporary eating and function space.

Stay and enjoy a long lunch matched to the Lake Breeze award winning wines.  Their menu includes regional platters and seasonal dishes using as much local produce as they can. 

The cellar door is open daily 10-5 for tastings and lunch.  They are easy to find, just 3 km south of the township of Langhorne Creek by following the signs.

Best Food: The Winehouse, Langhorne Creek

This house of wine celebrates a fantastic tasting experience, featuring four award winning boutique Langhorne Creek Wine labels. Ben Potts Wines, Gipsie Jack, the legendary John Glaetzer’s John’s Blend and Heartland by Ben Glaetzer are all on offer, plus if that’s not enough, they are also home to Langhorne Creek’s first craft beer label, Meechi Brewing Company. The Cellar Door is Open 10am-4pm.

What Gourmet Traveller Wine are really excited about though, is The Winehouse food offering. If time is on your side, stay for a lazy long lunch and sample some of the delicious fresh & seasonal foods they have to offer. Best Tasting Experience: Bremerton Wines

Bremerton Wines offer a great experience at their cellar door which is a bright and beautiful new extension to their restored 1866 stone barn. It’s a great place to enjoy a regionally inspired lunch, a picnic on the lawn, a gin flight, and of course, experience Bremerton’s award winning range of wines.

Their car park has 2 Tesla Charging Connectors – free to use to all customers and the general public.

They’re open 7 days a week for lunch, wine tasting and wine and gin flights, 10am -5pm (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday). Give them a call on (08) 8537 3093 or make a booking.

Best Additional Experience: Bleasdale Vineyards (Beyond the Cellar Door Tours)

‘Beyond the Cellar Door’ is an intimate, guided tour into the depths of Bleasdale Vineyard’s historic winery. Wander through old hand-hewn red gum vats and they’ll take you to new heights (weather permitting!) to see where the hills meet the ‘Creek’ and you may even spot the ‘Mulberry Tree’. You’ll learn exactly what happens to your wine from trellis to table, understand how the terroir of Langhorne Creek influences their stunning wines and you’ll taste directly from the barrel.

 $20 p/person. Complimentary for Press Club Members.

The tours are available at the below times and must be booked 48 hours in advance. Please allow one hour.

  • Friday 2:30pm
  • Saturday 11am

Maximum 8 people per session. Please call Bleasdale Vineyard if you have a request outside of this.

Please note: Children between the ages of 12 and 17 are free and are able to participate in the tour, but not the tasting. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted due to safety concerns of the working winery.
