Larry The Lobster Home To New Restaurant

Next time you’re heading down to the Limestone Coast, pay Larry the Lobster a visit, and check out newly opened Janet’s Takeaway.

One of South Australia’s most iconic BIG things, Larry The Lobster, has yet again, taken on a new lease of life.

With his future looking uncertain a number of times over the last few years, South Australia can now collectively give a sigh of relief that he’s here to stay.

As one of rural Australia’s ‘Big Things’ that was built 40 years ago, the 17m-tell crayfish has been an SA tourism destination for decades, but despite his popularity as a photo stop, he was desperately in need of some TLC and the funds just weren’t there.

In 2016, after hearing about Larry’s financial strife, Hamish and Andy launched the #PinchAMate campaign, to raise funds to save the big lobster, after receiving an email from Kingston local Gordon Shreeves.

While the fundraising helped with a refurbishment of the lacklustre Lobster, it wasn’t enough to save him, and last year, there was talk of Larry permanently relocating to WA after an interested party considered buying the supersized seafood icon.

Then, as happens in every good disaster-aversion story, local hero Tom Brinkworth swept in at the last minute, and bought not only Larry, but the restaurant building behind the coveted crustacean.

Since that moment in September 2018, plans have been underway to bring some fresh life to the location.

Janet’s Takeaway just opened at Larry the Lobster earlier this month, and it’s already getting great reviews.
