Last chance to have your say in this year’s local government elections

South Australians are encouraged to cast their vote in local government elections and have their say about who will represent them in their council area.

Don’t miss your opportunity to shape the future of your local community, as voting closes soon for the 2022 local government elections.

South Australians are encouraged to cast their vote in local government elections and have their say about who will represent them in their council area.

All individuals and businesses that are eligible to vote will now have received a ballot pack in the post, which includes information about the candidates for election, ballot papers and instructions on how to return – using the enclosed reply-paid envelope.

Voting for a candidate that represents your views and values is a great first step to becoming more engaged in your local community.

Elected council members are your local voice, with the responsibility to represent the ideas and issues affecting residents, businesses and community groups and implement a strategic vision to create a thriving community for everyone.

Community members in the City of Mount Gambier and the District Council of Grant will also vote on plebiscites concurrently with the election to determine this community’s support for the examination of the amalgamation of these two councils.

A positive result across both plebiscites does not mean these councils will be amalgamated, rather the Local Government Boundaries Commission will conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation and community consultation process.

Voting in the 2022 Local Government Elections closes on Thursday 10 November 2022. It is strongly recommended that you return your vote as soon as possible to ensure your ballot paper is received in time.

Completed ballot packs can also be placed in a ballot box at your council up until 5:00pm on Thursday 10 November 2022, it is recommended you call your local council to confirm where the box is in your council area.

Voters with low vision, and voters located interstate and overseas during the election period can vote in this year’s elections using ECSA’s telephone assisted voting service.

Minister for Local Government Geoff Brock said “Having been involved in the local government sector for more than three decades, I am passionate about ensuring we have strong local representation that best serves our communities.

“I encourage all South Australians to take the opportunity to vote for who will represent them in this year’s local government elections.

“When as many eligible people and businesses vote as possible, we encourage a diverse group of elected members who can represent a wide variety of different people and views.

“For the first time, assisted telephone voting will be available for people with sight-
impairment, and voters who are interstate and overseas – making these elections more accessible to ensure everyone can have their say.

“Engaging in these elections is particularly important for City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant community members, as they will also be voting on plebiscites to examine a possible amalgamation between the two councils,” Brock continued.

This service is available up until 5:00pm on Thursday 10 November 2022 (note service available during selected hours see:  https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/elections/council-elections/telephone-voting for details).
