Last Chance To Nominate A Citizen Of The Year

Time is running out to recognise and reward those who have a made a significant difference to your community.

The Citizen of the Year Awards acknowledge individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during the year, or given an outstanding service over a number of years, to the City of Adelaide.

Categories include education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of a community.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said, “This is an opportunity to reward and thank those people who go above and beyond the everyday to improve their community. I urge everyone to consider nominating someone that is making a difference and who inspires them.”

Submissions close on 30th November and awards will be presented on Australia Day 2012 in the Adelaide Town Hall by the Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

There are three categories for nominations: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (person must be under 30 years of age on 26 January 2012) and Community Event of the Year.

To be eligible for the first two awards, the nominee should have made a significant contribution to the community, be an inspirational role model, an Australian Citizen and had an impact on the City of Adelaide.

The selection criteria for the Community Event of the Year are the quality of the event, the effect on the Council area and the event’s contribution to the community.

Last year’s Citizen of the Year recipient Margie Fischer said she was shocked – but in a good way – upon learning of her Award.

“I felt honoured to receive the award and to know my work is valued and appreciated,” Margie said.

Young Citizen of the Year Julian O’Shea received the award for his work in engineering and international development.

“It was a great privilege to be recognised in my home city. I hope that receiving an award like this encourages other young South Australians to consider a career in science, technology and engineering,” Julian said.
