A highly regarded lawyer with nearly three decades experience in public and private practice has been appointed as South Australia’s next Crown Solicitor.
Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman said Laura Stein would take on the role from early next month.
“Laura Stein has an extensive background both in private practice and working for the Crown – rising through the ranks from High Court Judge’s Associate to the head of the largest division within the Crown Solicitor’s Office, Civil Litigation,” Attorney-General Chapman said.
“In private practice with Fisher Jeffries, she was involved in the litigation of many highly sensitive and complex cases.
“Since being employed within the Crown Solicitors’ Office, Ms Stein has overseen disputes relating to the construction and operation of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, and aspects of the development of emergency legislation relating to the Government response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“She has also taken on a significant leadership role in the day-to-day operation of, and reform within, the Crown Solicitor’s Office, including the digitalisation of the Civil Litigation Section.
“She is an exceptionally qualified candidate, and I look forward to her continuing to provide the same level of high quality advice for which she is well known, as she takes on this new role.
“Importantly, she is only the third woman to have been appointed Crown Solicitor in South Australia.”
Attorney-General Chapman also thanked outgoing Crown Solicitor, Mike Wait SC, who will be taking on the role of Solicitor-General, for his contribution.
Both appointments will take effect from August 3.
