Lawn mower racing is back this weekend

The event will feature 41 mowers straddling a lawnmower which has had its cutting deck removed.

When it comes to niche sports (chess boxing, anyone?) lawn mower racing might just about take the cake. The adrenaline-pumping event that combines Lewis Hamilton with lawn maintenance is returning to Cape Jervis this Saturday, and promises not only thrilling races to rev your engines but entertainment for all the family.

If you’ve never heard of lawn mower racing, we won’t hold it against you. The emerging sport involves racers straddling a lawnmower which has had its cutting deck removed and expertly weaving it around the track’s technically-challenging twists and turns at speeds of up to 60km/h.

Matthew Rowlands, President of South Australian Lawn Mower Racing Association, can’t wait for the May 15th event after its debut at Cape Jarvis in 2020.

“We’re thrilled to be back at Cape Jervis again this year, and even more excited to watch our sport grow, with 41 mowers competing at the track this weekend,” he says.

Spectators can guarantee they won’t miss out on any of the fun, with the Cape Jervis Tavern serving up an all-day feast of BBQ fare and hot donuts to sustain you after an energetic session on the bouncy castle. For those whose skills may be a bit rusty, free track practice opens up at 11am with the first race kicking off at midday. Proceeds from this weekend’s event go towards Sea Rescue and the Country Fire Service, so make sure you have a gold coin donation for entry and get ready to put your pedal to the metal.

Gates open at 9am at Ransford St, Cape Jervis, 5204.
