If you’ve noticed that more and more people around you are opting for a gluten-free diet, you’re not alone. A recent study has shown that gluten intolerance is four times more prevalent in society than it was 50 years ago, with many reasons cited including the introduction of newer wheat varieties, higher consumption of wheat-based products and the use of chemicals during the modern-day harvesting process.
So, if you or someone you know is avoiding gluten, you’re probably aware of the sacrifice that comes with it and how difficult it can be to find a tasty, gluten-free alternative to your favourite foods.
That’s where The Little Uraidla Bakehouse comes in. For some time now, the small Hills-based business has been running cooking classes, sharing family recipes and teaching the tricks of the trade to budding bakers in all aspects of German treats from tarts and cakes to loaves and biscuits. And now, owner Christine is adding gluten-free baking to the list, teaching us all how to make sweet, delicious variations of some of her most popular cakes that are so tasty you won’t even notice a difference.

“At our stalls at the Stirling and Uraidla Markets here in the Adelaide Hills, we used to offer a variety of gluten-free loaf cakes and tarts that were extremely popular,” Christine writes on her website. “In this class, I would like to show you how you can make some of these cakes yourself!”
Each class will vary slightly but all will see you make one loaf cake and one tart. Cake variations you could be making include plum & hazelnut, blueberry and lemon or apricot, almond and orange loaf and for the tarts? Well, that could be one of either berry tart with butter crumble, baked cheesecake or apple tart with lemon zest and cinnamon.
The bakers among us will know how important gluten is in baking as it acts as a binding ingredient that holds the structure together, however, Christine has mastered her technique and is now gladly sharing it with the world.
All classes are kept small with a maximum of 4 students to ensure there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and maximise your learning experience.
Classes run for 3.5 – 4 hours and you’ll leave with not only a new skill under your belt but two delicious treats to take home all for just $125.
Spots are filling fast so don’t delay if you want to get a piece of this (gluten-free) pie.
