A new era for Leigh Warren and Dancers was heralded this week with former Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) dancer / choreographer Daniel Jaber announced to take over the reigns from Leigh Warren as the company’s resident choreographer in 2014 and artistic director from 2015.

In addition to establishing himself in the last decade as one the nation’s most breathtaking dancers performing ADT’s most celebrated works, Jaber has received critical acclaim for his recent work and fresh provocative aesthetic as choreographer.

Last year, Jaber became the first choreographer commissioned to make a full-length work for ADT with Nought since Garry Stewart began his tenure as artistic director back in 1999.

On an international level Jaber’s career is equally impressive, working for 18 months in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, France and Nederlands with: Joachim Schloemer, Tchankee Dance Company, Companie PVC, Frances d’Ath, Alison Currie, Clint Lutes and presented work in the Lucky Trimmer Tanz Performance Serie, Berlin.

Leigh Warren said he is thrilled to be propelling the company into new territory by appointing Daniel Jaber as his successor.

“I’m proud to say that since we began Leigh Warren Dance we have constantly evolved, entertained and challenged our audience so I see the appointment of Daniel as an extension of LWD’s vision and another exciting part of the journey for our audience,” Mr Warren said.

“The future of LWD and indeed dance in Adelaide is in excellent hands with Daniel’s energy, talent and determination to nurture the next generation of Adelaide’s dancers.”

Jaber says his appointment as resident choreographer and Artistic Director of LWD represents another career defining opportunity that he will never take lightly.

“Like Leigh, I love Adelaide and I’m proud to say I have made it a point to develop my career in here, not only for myself but for future generations of dancers and audiences,” Jaber said.

“Leigh and I are different people from different background so there will obviously be a contrast in the subject matter and themes in future LWD work but I believe there will also be a strong sense of continuity as well. My work will be informed by the same dance literacy, dance styles and dance technique foundation I’ve always admired Leigh’s work.”

It will be a very busy transition year for both with Warren remaining in a mentor role for Jaber, LWD board member and continuing his independent director / choreographer work outside the company which includes choreographing and directing the much anticipated Philip Glass Trilogy opening at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 5 August this year. While Jaber will choreographer, direct and perform in Reassessment – A double bill at the Adelaide Festival Centre from 6-9 August.
