One of Adelaide’s longest-standing pizzerias is marking a major milestone by doing something almost unheard of in 2025 — rolling prices back half a century.
Leo’s Bar + Pizza, a Prospect Road institution since 1975, is celebrating its 50th birthday with a one-night-only throwback event that pays homage to the year it first fired up the ovens. On Wednesday 17 December, between 6pm and 8pm, customers can order classic favourites at their original 1975 prices.
For two hours only, a large ham and pineapple pizza will cost just $9.00, a pepperoni will be $8.80, and garlic bread will be $1.80 — a rare chance for Adelaide locals to enjoy a slice of nostalgia along with their dinner.
When Leo’s first opened, pizza was still something of a novelty in Australia. ABBA topped the charts, Jaws was packing out cinemas, and Prospect Road welcomed what would become one of the city’s most enduring family-run eateries. Founded by Gunther and Sashi, Leo’s quickly became a fixture for locals, serving generations of families over five decades.
Still in family hands today, the pizzeria is now run by their children, Shelvin and Shasha, who quite literally grew up inside the business. The siblings lived in the back room — now the kitchen — and have been working behind the counter since they were old enough to count change.
As Leo’s reaches its half-century milestone, Shelvin says the anniversary is about gratitude as much as celebration.
“Leo’s has always been about family – our own family and the generations of families who’ve grown up eating here,” says Shelvin. “Bringing back 1975 prices for one night only felt like the best way to thank the Prospect community who’ve supported us for the last 50 years and hopefully for 50 years more!”
Under Shelvin and Shasha’s stewardship, Leo’s has continued to evolve while staying true to its roots. The venue has undergone a modern fit-out in recent years, along with the addition of a relaxed beer garden out the back — a summer-friendly space designed for lingering over slices and drinks long into the evening.
From its iconic home at 104 Prospect Road, Leo’s Bar + Pizza continues to do what it has done best since day one: serve familiar, crowd-pleasing pizzas that keep locals coming back. For one night only, it’s also offering a rare reminder of just how much things — and prices — have changed since 1975.
