Let’s Get LOUD For Loud Shirt Day This Friday

Help give the gift of sound and speech to deaf children.

Friday October 21 is Loud Shirt Day – a major annual fundraiser when people are encouraged to wear their brightest and ‘LOUDEST’ clothes to help give the gift of sound and speech to deaf children.

Hearing loss is the most common congenital birth defect, with 3 out of every 1000 babies born diagnosed with a hearing impairment or deafness.

As almost all of these children – 92 per cent – are born to hearing parents, it can be a real shock to families.

Not-for-profit organisation the Cora Barclay Centre is urging all South Australians to get behind Loud Shirt Day to help deliver vital services to thousands of local deaf or hearing impaired children.

Cora Barclay Centre Chief Executive Officer Michael Forwood says people can get involved by making a donation to the Cora Barclay Centre and showing off their best loud outfits – the brighter and more outrageous the better.

“It’s a great excuse to wear your brightest clothes and raise some much needed money. Or just wear something extra loud on the day and encourage others to do the same. Whether you fancy stripes, florals, polka dots or Hawaiian shirts, as long as your outfit has colour and pizzazz, it will be perfect for Loud Shirt Day.

Don’t forget to share photos of yourself with the hashtag #LoudShirtDay to let everyone know how easy and fun it is to be involved,” said Mr Forwood.

“This year is Cora Barclay Centre’s 70th year of helping hearing impaired children, so we’re really hoping the community will get behind us to raise $70,000 in South Australia.”

The public’s support will help give deaf children sound and speech, with all funds from Loud Shirt Day in South Australia going to the Cora Barclay Centre.

The Centre aims to teach deaf children to listen, speak and communicate with the world, opening doors to better education and future employment opportunities for them.

Loud Shirt DayThe Centre’s early intervention program has been delivering outcomes for severely and profoundly deaf children in SA for more than 70 years, and provides a range of services for children, all of whom are fitted with hearing aids, cochlear implants or other listening devices.

The Centre never turns away a deaf child and relies heavily on community and corporate support and donations to help raise the funds necessary to deliver intensive therapy services to those families that need them.

Loud Shirt Day was created in South Australia 16 years ago and has now spread across Australia, New Zealand and more recently into the UK and North America.

In South Australia, the day has so far raised more than $500,000 and nationally more than $3 million.
