Lightning strike caused major scrub fire in Murraylands

A scrub fire in the Murraylands has been contained after lightning strikes were believed to be the cause.

Lightning strikes are believed to be the cause of a scrub fire near Swan Reach in the Murraylands on Thursday.

The fire has since been contained by an earth break, with backburning activities conducted overnight to reinforce the break. The fireground is 60 hectares in size.

Firefighters from the Country Fire Service and National Parks and Wildlife Services SA, supported by observational aircraft and heavy machinery will continue to monitor and work around the fireground today.

During the day, the public may see increased levels of dust and smoke through the fireground as crews continue to extinguish hotspots and remove unburnt fuels.

Residents near the Punyelroo area should remain aware and informed, however, the fire is not currently posing a risk to the public.

If you need to travel on roads nearby, please take care and drive to the local conditions, as heavy machinery and firefighting equipment will be moving in the area.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Check and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan.
  • Protect yourself from the fire’s heat – put on protective clothing.
  • Tell family and friends of your plans.

IF YOU ARE LEAVING:

  • Leave now, don’t delay.
  • Roads may become blocked or access may change. Smoke will reduce visibility.
  • Secure your pets for travel.
  • If you become stuck in your car, park away from bushes, cover yourself, get onto the floor as the windows may break from the intense heat.

IF YOU ARE NOT LEAVING; PREPARE TO DEFEND:

  • Identify a safe place inside, with more than one exit, before the fire arrives. Keep moving so you are away from the heat of the fire.
  • Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins and outdoor furniture away from your house.
  • Close doors and windows to keep smoke out.
  • Bring pets inside and restrain them.
  • If you have sprinklers, turn them on to wet the area.
  • If your building catches fire, go to an area already burnt. Check around you for anything burning.
