Lights, camera, action! ‘Top End Bub’ marks South Australia’s Prime Video debut

Production for SA’s first Prime Video scripted series ‘Top End Bub’ is set to kick off this May.

South Australia is set to commence the production of its inaugural scripted series on Prime Video, “Top End Bub.” Supported by the Malinauskas Labor Government, this television venture marks a significant milestone as the first Prime Video scripted series to be filmed in the region.

Created, written, and executive produced by the talented South Australian duo, Joshua Tyler and Miranda Tapsell, “Top End Bub” will be a an eight-part series. Filming will take place in Adelaide, utilising the state-of-the-art facilities at the South Australian Film Corporation’s Adelaide Studios production facilities, as well as in Darwin. The production is scheduled to kick off next month, promising an exciting journey for both cast and crew.

“It’s very exciting to have new TV series Top End Bub being made here in South Australia as the first Prime Video scripted series to be made in the state,” Minister for Arts Andrea Michaels said.

“It speaks to the extraordinary talent of our screen sector that we continue to see a pipeline of major productions taking place in our state, driven by local creatives telling uniquely Australian stories such as this.”

The series boasts a stellar cast, including acclaimed actors Miranda Tapsell (“The Dry,” “The Sapphires”) and Gwilym Lee (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Great”). A spin-off of the beloved film “Top End Wedding,” which was a box office sensation in 2019, grossing over $5.2 million, “Top End Bub” aims to captivate audiences with its intriguing storyline and compelling characters.

“It has been fun to dive back into the world of Top End Wedding, a world that means so much to us and to our audience. A romantic setting full of funny characters who face heartbreaking challenges in heart-warming ways. I am thrilled to be collaborating with such an incredible team,” SA co-creator and co-writer Joshua Tyler said.

At the heart of “Top End Bub” is Lauren, a dynamic Indigenous lawyer, and her husband Ned, a talented baker. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they become guardians to Lauren’s eight-year-old niece, prompting a move from Adelaide to the top end, where the outback meets the tropics. As they navigate the challenges of parenthood and strive to maintain their relationship, Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, embracing her cultural responsibilities and evolving into a vital pillar of her family.

Produced by Goalpost Pictures, with Rosemary Blight serving as Executive Producer alongside Joshua Tyler and Miranda Tapsell, “Top End Bub” is set to be directed by the dynamic duo of Christiaan Van Vuuren and Shari Sebbens.

As “Top End Bub” gears up for production, anticipation runs high, heralding a new era of storytelling from the heart of South Australia.
