South Australia Set to Sparkle with the Lights of Lobethal Festival
This Saturday, December 9th, 2023, marks the return of the much-anticipated Lights of Lobethal Festival, a dazzling event that has been brightening the South Australian skies since the 1950s. Sponsored by RAA, this festival is renowned for being the largest community-driven Christmas light display in the southern hemisphere, running from December 9th to 29th. What makes this event even more special is its foundation in community spirit, being entirely coordinated by dedicated volunteers and local residents.
The festival has its roots in a humble tradition where local business owners would hand-paint light bulbs to adorn their shops and homes. Over the years, this practice has blossomed into a spectacular global attraction. Today, the village of Lobethal transforms into a breathtaking wonderland, with about 80% of homes and businesses participating, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe.
The festivities kick off with the Lobethal Christmas Pageant and Opening Night on Saturday, December 9, starting at 7:30 PM. This enchanting evening will feature a magical parade of floats, vibrant displays, and an abundance of festive cheer, officially marking the start of Lobethal’s Christmas celebrations.
In 2023, a stroll through Lobethal’s streets during the festival is more than just a walk; it’s a journey through a mesmerizing Christmas wonderland. The town becomes a canvas for festive creativity, with homes decked out in a dazzling array of lights and decorations. From penguins and elves to Christmas dragons and Santa Claus on a motorbike, the displays are a feast for the eyes and a source of delight for all ages.
Among the standout attractions are Koko Koala, a two-meter tall creation, and Dusty the Snow Man, both generously donated by Costco. These charming characters are part of the Lobethal Lights committee’s innovative lending program, adding a unique flair to the festival. Visitors should keep an eye out for these whimsical figures as they wander through the town.
A must-visit spot on the lights trail is 5 Christmas Lane, Lobethal, where local residents Bill and Peg have outdone themselves with a stunning display of over 50,000 lights. Their home is a testament to the festive spirit, inviting visitors to explore their veranda, which features intricate Christmas windows displaying miniature villages and a collection of cherished Christmas memorabilia. For more information on this spectacular display, visit the official website at Christmas Lane.
