It’s the most wonderful time of the year and there’s no denying the one element of Christmas that brings the most joy – Christmas lights. The bright, twinkling glow of adorned houses brings a feeling of joy and happiness that is undeniable and proven time and time again when people of all ages flock to the streets to take in their beauty.

And there is one South Australian town that does Christmas lights like no other. Tucked at the foot of the Adelaide Hills, Lobethal is a small, usually tranquil town but that all changes when the festive season rolls around and the annual Lights of Lobethal Festival takes over.

For over 60 years, the people of Lobethal band together to put on an impressive display of lights in what is now the largest Christmas light display in the Southern Hemisphere.

Kicking off on the 10th of December, the festivities will officially begin with the annual “Lights On” Ceremony and Pageant which will see Christmas cheer spill to the streets and parade down Lobethal’s Main Street to mark the beginning of the festival.

A myriad of market stalls from local producers will line the streets during Opening Night so you can even do some Christmas shopping while you’re there! Adelaide Hills favourites and major sponsor of the lights, Udder Delights, will be just one of the stalls that are set up on the night with some cheese specials and perhaps a cheeky tasting of some of their top sellers.

Local Lobethal vendors will also be joining in the fun with a range of food and drink specials. One such venue, the Lobethal Bierhaus will be teaming up with Udder Delights to create a four-cheese Udder Delights pizza that will only be available on opening night.

After a three-year hiatus due to Covid-19, organisers and sponsors are thrilled to be able to bring the event back to the community in all its glory this year. In a post on social media, Udder Delights expressed their joy in being part of the event once again.

“After the last few years, we are excited to see the pageant and opening night going ahead and this season is extra special because they are happening on the same night!”

The Lights of Lobethal will twinkle every night for the festive season with a number of other activities and events happening throughout.
