Calling all budding cricket stars!
Cricket Australia’s Play-Cricket program has launched a program designed just for girls.
Little Strikers is a four-week program designed for female players aged between 8-10 years old to sample the skills needed to progress into South Australia’s Strikers Girls Cricket League.
There are four clubs across Adelaide that will host the program: Gepps Cross, Grange, Marion and Reynella.
The program which costs $35 per child includes:
- A Strikers playing shirt
- Training sessions for participants to practice their cricket skills and familiarise themselves with equipment
- 4 weeks of modified matches
- Protective equipment for Batters
- Coaching from accredited cricket coaches
Grange Cricket Club Junior Director Damien Breen says the program is a great way to boost girls confidence.
“We are trying to give the girls an in, into cricket but also giving them the opportunity to meet other girls from the local area who are outside of their normal school or netball friends,” said Breen.
“The program gives the girls another avenue into playing sports with their peers away from the competitiveness of playing against another gender.”

“We feel that there’s a gap in cricket. We have 220 juniors and on average only 10 of those are girls, so there is a need to grow the quantity of our female cricketers.”
Damien continued by explaining cricket isn’t just about the sport, it’s about learning life skills children might not learn in the classroom.
“Cricket is an important way to help young people become better young adults. We work really hard on not just teaching cricket but also life skills, we want to teach the juniors how to approach day to day activities and be good sports. “
“Little Strikers more about teaching them to be better young citizens than just how to play cricket.”

Grange Cricket Club is an inclusive club that encourages people of all backgrounds, abilities and genders to join the sport.
“Bookings for Little Strikers are open – Grange doesn’t say no to anyone, being a community club we are here for the whole community.”
The Little Strikers program kicks off in February and requires once weekly attendance.
