Live at the Soul Box: Variety Show – 2012 Cabaret Fringe

The discovery of new venues is half the fun of any Fringe and The Soul Box is one worth exploring. It’s been around for a few months now, but new on my list of favourites, offering cocktail happy hours, a relaxing lounge, and a cabaret space that’s both spacious and comfortable. In fact the only thing not to like about this hidden gem at the western end of Hindley Street was their logo, projected onto the back of the stage where it creates a lighting black spot over the faces of the performers.

The Variety Show on offer for the Cabaret Fringe lives up to its name, with differing acts promised for each session, ranging from jazz and blues to comedy and theatre games.

The opening night session, while low on patrons, sizzled with a selection of three shows, beginning with a trio of Conservatorium of Music students. Lewis on drums, John on bass and Tom on keyboards had come together only a few days earlier as a band and their lack of familiarity with each other was evident in between numbers, but each of these talented young musicians knew their stuff, offering a funky opening set.

MC Rob Scott followed on the dobro, accompanied by Patrick on sax and clarinet. This seasoned duo ramped up the tempo with a short but excellent bluegrass set, before opening the stage to a jam session that introduced a host of new musicians.

An entertaining night in an exciting new venue.
