Live Colombian bands and reggaeton dance floors, Viva Colombia Fest will transform The Gov this July

For almost two decades Viva Columbia Fest in Adelaide has been a huge success full of dancing, colour and celebration.

When winter hits Adelaide, it’s usually a time for cosy nights and quiet weekends. But for one night this July, the city will burst into colour, rhythm and celebration as Viva Colombia Fest returns to The Gov.

For nearly two decades, Viva Colombia Fest has been bringing the spirit of Colombia to Adelaide. What started as a way for Colombians living overseas to celebrate Colombian Independence Day has grown into a vibrant cultural celebration welcoming people from all backgrounds.

“It’s a celebration for everybody,” Event organiser Hugo Salcedo says. “Every year we see people from many cultures coming along. People love the music, they love the dancing, and the energy.”

Colombia celebrates its independence on July 20, marking freedom from Spanish rule. Around the world, Colombians gather to honour the day, and Adelaide is no exception. This year’s festival lands on July 18, turning The Gov into a colourful hub of Latin music, dance and culture.

The venue is transformed with the colours of the Colombian flag yellow, blue and red, creating an atmosphere that Hugo says feels like a carnival.

The night begins at 8pm and unfolds across two different spaces. One room will host live bands and traditional dance performances, celebrating Colombia’s rich musical heritage with rhythms like salsa. The second room will keep the party going with Latin favourites and modern hits, including reggaeton tracks inspired by global superstars like Shakira. Hugo said this year what makes it special is almost every song played will be by a Columbian artist.

But the real showstopper comes later in the night. At midnight, the Gov erupts as La Hora Loca takes over. Hugo said it turns into crazy hour as the dance floor explodes with music, dancers, feathers, drums, balloons and flashing LED sticks, creating a wild carnival.

And of course, no cultural celebration would be complete without food. Traditional Colombian snacks will be served throughout the night, including classics like golden, crispy empanadas prepared by a dedicated Colombian chef.

Whether you’re Colombian, Latin American, or just someone who loves a great party, Viva Colombia Fest promises a joyful night packed with colour, rhythm and the unmistakable spirit of Colombia.
