Local artist TaylrJay transforms Woodside water tank into vibrant mural celebrating community heritage

A water tank in Woodside has been transformed into a stunning mural by local artist TaylrJay, featuring native wildlife and historical motifs that celebrate the area’s unique heritage and community spirit.

A formerly plain water tank in Woodside, South Australia, has been artistically transformed into a vibrant public mural, transforming the visual landscape of the region and reflecting its rich cultural and natural heritage. The freshly completed artwork adorns SA Water’s water storage tank and features intricate designs that showcase local wildlife, flora, history, and industries such as viticulture and gold mining.

The artistic endeavor was led by TaylrJay, an artist from Adelaide Hills, who drew inspiration from the local surroundings and the community’s characteristics. Incorporating elements like Slender Mint, Correa, and Long Purple-flag, the mural richly displays the biodiversity of Woodside. It also artistically narrates the area’s engagement with water through the depiction of a wooden sluice used historically in the local gold mines.

This initiative was orchestrated by the community group Love Woodside, with financial and logistical support from Arts SA, Country Arts SA, and SA Water. Discussing the project, Love Woodside Tank Mural Project Coordinator Nerissa Walton shared, “It has turned out even better than we imagined, and we thank SA Water for willingly providing the canvas for this project. The site has been transformed into a source of joy for our community.”

SA Water’s involvement in this project goes beyond just providing the water tank for the mural. Kellie McDonald, SA Water’s Manager of Brand and Community Connection, highlighted the dual nature of the tank’s role in the community. “The tank plays a critical role in delivering clean, safe drinking water to local homes and businesses, and this was a fantastic opportunity to enhance its presence as a public asset,” she said. “The mural helps to improve the visual appeal of the area while creating a new point of interest for residents and visitors.”

The project also serves a broader objective of integrating art with public infrastructure to foster community engagement and regional pride. This is echoed in McDonald’s comments outlining future plans, “Next year, the Love Woodside Group will help us create a garden of local native plants around the tank, further enhancing the area.”

The mural in Woodside is now part of SA Water’s growing portfolio of infrastructure-based art installations across both metropolitan and regional areas.
