Local boy set to star in State Opera SA’s Macbeth next month after state-wide search

After an overwhelming response of applications, State Opera South Australia is thrilled to announce that Elliott Purdie has been cast in the role of Fleance.

After an overwhelming response of applications, State Opera South Australia is thrilled to announce that Elliott Purdie has been cast in the role of Fleance in Giuseppe Verdi’ s grand opera adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth, at Her Majesty’s Theatre this September

This co-production with West Australian Opera, directed by Stuart Maunder, explores Macbeth’s themes of power, ambition and fate, highlighted by a score filled with Verdi’s signature emotional climax and heart- stopping moments—the result is a grand opera like no other.

When asked about receiving the great news, Elliott said: “When I was told I got the role, I couldn’t believe it! I adore musicals but had never had anything to do with opera before – I can’t wait! Before coming to the audition, I watched YouTube videos of the director, Stuart Maunder… he seemed initially a bit scary (or maybe I was a bit nervous!) but I think it will be a lot of fun to work with him and I look forward to meeting the rest of the cast and crew.”

Elliott began training and performing with Theatre Bugs when he was seven years old. He has been training and performing in all styles of dance since age eight with Theatre Bugs, TIDC and Scotch College.

Some of Elliott’s most recent performances include Jeremy Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Fringe 2023 – Adelaide Theatre Academy), Marty in Madagascar Jr (Nov 2022 – Adelaide Youth Theatre), Macduff’s Son in Macbeth (Aug 2021 – Independent Theatre), Michael Banks in Mary Poppins (Fringe 2021 – Adelaide Theatre Academy) and Chip in Beauty and the Beast Jr (Dec 2020 – Adelaide Youth Theatre).

Elliott also attended weekly private singing tuition with Ben Francis at Theatre Bugs (three years) and now with Andy Turner at Scotch College.

Macbeth is a portrait in music of one of the world’s most power-hungry couples. A witches’ prophecy leads them down a murderous path, and their ruthless desire to ascend the throne results in unspeakable acts that ultimately drive them to madness.

Maunder said that the dark and twisted tale of Macbeth translates so spectacularly to the opera stage.
“No other composer can match the power, terror and emotional pull of Verdi. This 1847 version comes from a period where Verdi was at the height of his youthful powers.

“Big, bold and full of blood and thunder, our adaptation has stunning sets and lighting, with an all-star cast from across the globe,” he said.
