The South Australian Government has announced the second round of funding for the South Australian Car Club Program. With a budget of $2 million, this unique initiative is specifically designed to support the growth of local car and motorcycle clubs. It focuses on enabling these clubs to organise larger and more impressive events, cover increasing operational costs, and effectively manage their participation in the conditional registration scheme.
In its first round, which took place in June 2023, the program distributed $500,000 among various recipients, supporting significant events such as the Festival of Motorcycling, the BSA Motorcycle 60th International Rally, and the 2024 Porsche Easter Nationals. Additionally, it facilitated substantial renovations for the Port Pirie Motorcycle Club and Mount Gambier Veteran and Vintage Car Club and an upgrade for the Collingrove Hillclimb Track.
The second round of this program is part of the State Government’s broader strategy to nurture the motorsport community in South Australia. Clubs eligible for this round of funding can use the grants for various purposes, including purchasing safety and operational equipment, hosting state and national events, training instructors, officials, administrators, and volunteers, and increasing female participation in motorsports. To qualify, clubs must be non-profit entities that have been operational for at least 12 months.
South Australia is home to over 200 recognised motoring clubs, and the program, which allocates $500,000 annually over four years, aims to enhance the state’s reputation as a hub for motorsports. The current application period for the second round will close at midday on 22 December 2023.
Tom Koutsantonis, a key figure in this initiative, commented on the program’s impact.
‘The success of this week’s VAILO Adelaide 500, the returned Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and the return of the SA Car Club Program has us making huge inroads to reclaiming the state’s title as the home of motorsport.’
He further emphasised the historical significance of car and motorcycle clubs in South Australia, highlighting that “this program, a Malinauskas Labor Government election commitment, will help keep our car and motorcycle clubs thriving.”
Koutsantonis also mentioned the enthusiastic response to the first round of grants.
‘The inaugural round of grants earlier this year saw an overwhelming number of applications – which tells me that South Australian car and motorcycle clubs are ready and revving to host world-class events in first-rate facilities.’
‘We recognise the pivotal role our clubs play in our community, and this program will help them not only avoid stalling but excel in the years to come.’
