Local Clare winery to take over historic Rising Sun Hotel with fresh new vision

A beloved Clare Valley pub enters a new era as the team behind Skillogalee breathes fresh life into The Rising Sun Hotel, blending history with heartfelt hospitality.

A beloved piece of Clare Valley history is about to start to writing its next chapter, as the Rising Sun Hotel in Auburn welcomes new ownership and a fresh local vision.

After standing proudly at the southern gateway to the Clare Valley for nearly 175 years, the iconic pub has officially changed hands, now under the care of the family behind nearby Skillogalee Estate.

Known for their deep ties to the region and a passion for local produce, the new custodians are promising to breathe new life into the historic venue while keeping its soul intact.

The Rising Sun will now close temporarily for a quick refurb to the front bar and some much-needed updates to the building’s facilities. Once reopened, it’ll be the kind of country pub that locals are proud of and visitors talk about long after heading home.

Owner Simon Clausen says the goal is to honour the pub’s legacy as a local gathering place while raising the bar in terms of hospitality.

“We love Auburn, the Clare Valley and the community that makes this region so special,” said Simon.

‘The Rising Sun has always been a community meeting place. We’re really looking forward to honouring that and creating a warm, generous and local experience built on great food and drink, and great company,” he says.’

When doors open again, the front bar will reopen first, with the back dining room and accommodation to follow in coming months, patrons can expect a thoughtfully modern take on the classic Aussie pub.

That means hearty, seasonal fare made with ingredients from South Australia’s best growers and producers.

The drinks list will lean into the Clare Valley’s exceptional winemaking pedigree, with a rotating tap selection featuring South Australian only beers.

The project will also see a significant cultural and community shift with the removal of the venue’s poker machines, reinforcing the owners’ commitment to creating a relaxed, welcoming space that celebrates connection over pokies.

Executive Chef Dan Moss will take the reins in the kitchen, bringing his locavore flair and deep regional roots to the menu. Front of house will be helmed by Executive Hospitality Manager Priscila Cunha, while General Manager Guy Parkinson will be overseeing both venues and pouring the very first pint when the Rising Sun’s doors swing open once more.

With accommodation and new dining space also in the works, the revitalisation of this much-loved venue is shaping up to be a win for locals, wine lovers and weekenders alike.

The official reopening date and full dining details will be announced in the coming weeks. For now, locals can take comfort in knowing that this historic hotel isn’t just staying in the community, it’s being reimagined by the very people who call the Clare Valley home.
