Walking has always been known for its numerous health benefits, and the Heart Foundation is shining a spotlight on the 2023 Golden Shoe Awards winners who have dedicated their time and efforts to promote active lifestyles in their local communities.

These eight exceptional Walk Organisers have been recognised for their commitment to supporting new and seasoned walkers, improving physical fitness, and enhancing mental wellbeing.

The South Australian woman taking home a Golden Shoe Award is Elaine Small who guides a group of 49 walkers.

The Heart Foundation’s Senior Advisor for Physical Activity, Elizabeth Calleja, congratulated the winners, stating, “they were awarded the golden shoe because of their untiring service to the community.”

The Golden Shoe Awards celebrate individuals who have gone above and beyond in their roles as walk organisers, making a positive impact on the lives of many.

Heart Foundation Walking, Australia’s largest free walking network, has witnessed a significant increase in participation over the past 28 years.

“Walking continues to empower so many people – especially those who may otherwise miss out on exercise and socializing with others,” says Ms. Calleja.

She further emphasises the life-saving potential of joining a Heart Foundation walking group, with many individuals finding solace and support within these communities.

Heart Foundation Walking Groups extend their reach to various regions across Australia, including remote and sparsely populated areas. These groups have become a vital resource for individuals seeking the benefits of walking and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a supportive community. The annual walker survey highlights the positive impact of group walking, with over 90 percent of participants reporting improvements in physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Research has shown that walking for 30 minutes or more each day can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. Beyond the physical benefits, walking also contributes to better daily mood and overall mental health, emphasizing the holistic advantages of this simple yet effective activity.

The recipients of the Golden Shoe Awards have been awarded a special golden shoe pin, a certificate, and a $250 VISA gift card in recognition of their outstanding contributions. Let’s meet this year’s winners:

For anyone looking to embark on a walking journey, it is advisable to start at your own level and gradually increase the duration, pace, and distance. Being active on most days of the week, even with three walking sessions of 10 minutes each, can yield significant benefits.
