Glam Chat: Interview with Paul Vasileff of Paolo Sebastian

Glam Adelaide had the pleasure to speak to Paul Vasileff about Paolo Sebastian’s latest couture collection, Moonlight Serenade.

Paolo Sebastian Founder and Designer, Paul Vasileff, recently released his latest 2022-2023 Autumn/Winter couture collection, Moonlight Serenade, which is described as a tribute to “long-forgotten romance and modern dreamers in a vintage world”.

The dazzling yet delicate colour palette of rosa polvera, moonlight ivory, stardust grey and midnight waltz set the tone for this star-studded collection. Shards of Swarovski crystals were even embroidered into some of the pieces to help bring the light, glitter, and romance.

Moonlight Serenade closely followed Paolo Sebastian’s March collection, The Wild Swans, which made a splash this year on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, worn by two internationally recognised models, Megan Blake Irwin and Chloe Lloyd.

Out of curiosity, Glam Adelaide spoke to Paul about the collection, what it takes to design a dress, and some of his career highlights so far.

When designing a collection, Paul shared, it can take anywhere from “a couple of minutes” to “a couple of months” to refine.

“When you’re talking collection, it’s really a 6 month process. From conception to completion of the actual collection itself,” Paul continued.

Wild Swans, because the story was so strong, was very easy. The problem for me with that collection was editing it back… it easily could’ve blown up into a 60-piece collection.”

While The Wild Swans was inspired by the Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christen Anderson, Moonlight Serenade was the first time Paul designed a collection based on a song, with the fourteen-piece collection taking its namesake from a musical composition by Glenn Miller.

Paul says its these stories that enthral Paolo Sebastian’s loyal following and inspire local and international celebrities to collaborate with the brand.

“Carrie Bickmore has been a really big champion for us,” says Paul.

“I think the first time [she wore Paolo Sebastian] was 2013/2014 and we haven’t stopped working together since…

“We’ve had some really amazing moments together like when she won the Gold Logie … that really helped to define our place on the red carpet, and I know its something she looks back on with fond memories.”

But Paul says his biggest “starstruck” moment was when he was able to design gowns for Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry.

“I think when we worked with Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry – they were two of the biggest names that we’ve gotten to work with,” says Paul.

“Their stylists got in touch with us, having seen our work and asked us to create something for them, which was obviously a huge honour. And yeah, it’s just kind of surreal to think you’re creating something for these people you’ve looked up to and admired.”
