The secret world of smokers is explored in Pang Ho-Cheung’s Love in a Puff, screening exclusively at the Mercury Cinema from 9-17 July. Following a 2007 Hong Kong government crack-down on indoor smoking, smokers are forced to head outside to indulge in their secret pleasures. When two workers meet whilst on cigarette break, so begins a romance set in the unlikely surroundings of garbage cans and street gutters.

Pang Ho-Cheung, director of festival-hit films such as Isabella and Men Suddenly in Black, returns with a romantic comedy that perfectly captures the behaviour, rituals and dating etiquette of young, local Hong Kongers. Co-written by Ho-Cheung and current “it” filmmaker Heiward Mak Hei-Yan (High Noon), the script is accordingly packed with sharp observations, political incorrectness and crude Cantonese euphemisms and slang.

As any smoker will tell you, the best conversations happen on cigarette breaks – stories of intrigue, love, gossip and hilarity. For non-smokers, Love in a Puff provides an entrée into this hidden realm, while also providing a look at the restless, mesmerising pulse of modern Hong Kong.

Consider Love in a Puff your trip to Hong Kong – an insider’s guide to the dazzling city from the best places to eat, right down to the great conversations you’d never otherwise have.
