Goodbye Lukoumades, hello Toucan Tango – Adelaide’s newest acai bar chain! With the first opened store in January at Henley Beach, the recently closed Lukoumades store at Hyde Park is transforming into a Toucan Tango and is going to continue satisfying our sweet tooth. King William Road will be the new home for acai!
Just this week, we found out Lukoumades had closed its last store in SA, but the team were quick to announce that the location would be transformed into a second Toucan Tango acai bar.
Using it’s signature purple bucket acai, Amazon Power, the new store promises to provide thick and creamy acai, highlighting its superfood qualities – just like their store in Henley Beach. Filled with antioxidants, fibre, and healthy fats, there are so many toppings to keep your bowl wholesome or, dessert-ify with toppings like Biscoff, bueno, and of course pistachio papi – a little nod of acknowledgment to Lukoumades.
The new direction is bittersweet, with Lukoumades having served up their beloved dough balls for a super successful seven years. Manager, Lily Mittiga, is proud of the passionate customer base the business has built through its seven year stint of serving up SA.
Mittiga says, “I believe over the last seven years we have built quite a strong relationship with many of our regular customers. We know that they’re probably going to be sad to see Lukoumades go, but we hope that they can support us as our new brand, Toucan Tango.”
Known to serve golden brown, bite-sized dough balls, Lukoumades reinvented the traditional sweet with modern twists and gave us a unique dessert spot. Now, at the same location, the team are getting ready to shake things up in Adelaide with a whole new açai experience!
So why acai? Mittiga says, “earlier in the year we changed our Henley Beach Lukoumades location to Toucan Tango. We just noticed that acai was the latest thing, very popular at the moment!”
Sometimes location is everything, and Mittiga thinks there’s a wonderful opportunity to serve up acai in Hyde Park. “We’ve got prime locations, both on King William Road and Henley Square. We thought why not make the change.”
Mittiga says, “initially it was just the one store and as the year’s gone on Toucan Tango has been doing very well. We thought we’d make the decision to switch up the Hyde Park location. Change isn’t always bad, sometimes it’s needed. We believe Lukoumades had a very successful seven years. It’s time had just come to an end.”
An acai bowl is not an acai bowl without crunchy granola, and Toucan Tango are making their granola mix in-house, giving us great quality and tasty toppings. They are also serving up freshly made juices, smoothies, fresh coconut water, housemate protein balls, and coffee – making the store a perfect suburban spot for a quick snack pick-up, weekend activity, or even a late night dessert spot!
Mittiga describes in-house granola crafting process as follows. “Our granola and protein balls are made in house. For our granola we get all the nuts and seeds in, then crush them down. Mix them together with maple syrup, coconut and cinnamon, then we roast it all in the oven.”
A new styling fit out will make the acai bar pop with purple, while the same great layout will prove perfect for serving up Toucan Tango’s refined acai menu.
Opening just in time for the school holidays, Toucan Tango will be open for business on the 30th of September. Look out the following weekend for grand opening festivities and plenty of free acai to go around from 9-10am on Saturday and Sunday, 5th and 6th of October.
